Today I pay tribute to my ultimate favourite man (he comes after Daddy in Heaven and Daddy on Earth of course!) - Bill Cosby.
To those who do not know him, all I can say is you have missed out on something spectacular in your childhood or life... depending on when you got to know him.
Me, I grew up watching him - The Cosby Show. The family man with 5 children (4 daughers & 1 son) and gorgeous intelligent wife. I think my dad identified with him as well, being the only male in a house with 5 women and no other male to back him up... I felt sorry for him too... but that was when my hormones were dormant. I was heartbroken when the series ended as I always thought I would live to see the day when all the kids have grown up and married. Sad to say they ended the series with Theo graduating. Some people played with dolls, some people had a favourite pillow. I had the Cosby show. It was a family thing. No matter what we did, or where we went, we always came back in time for the Cosby Show. And we would always record it if one wasn't at home. No wait! Come to think of it, we always recorded it! And I will sit and watch it over and over and over again! So often that after a few seconds the show begins, I already know is going to happen next... and despite the gazillion times I have watched it, I still laugh. Now THAT is good humour!
Cosby is funny, profound and yet charming and lovable. Maybe that is how I have come to appreciate humour and have made it a priority that whoever I end up with MUST have a sense of humour. Must be able to laugh at himself. And must love music. Most occasions, Huxtable (Cosby's character) always ended the series with a little dance or romantic scene with his wife (actress : Priscilla Rashad).
Reading his books were also a delight... Fatherhood (no I am not one... but it is still a good read!) made me laugh everytime I read it - think I read it more times then I read the bible! Yes... bad girl!
Anyway... to THE man who was a huge part of my life... I tribute this entry to him - Bill Cosby.
"My childhood should have taught me lessons for my own parenthood, but it didn't because parenting can be learned only by people who have no children."
"Human beings are the only creatures that allow their children to come back home."
"A word to the wise ain't necessary -- it's the stupid ones that need the advice."
Poets have said that the reason to have children is to give yourself immortality. Immortality? Now that I have five children, my only hope is that they are all out of the house before I die.
There is hope for the future because God has a sense of humor and we are funny to God.
"People putting their clothes on backward: Isn't that a sign of something gone wrong? ... People with their hats on backward, pants down around the crack, isn't that a sign of something, or are you waiting for Jesus to pull his pants up? Isn't it a sign of something when she has her dress all the way up ... and got all type of needles [piercings] going through her body? What part of Africa did this come from? We are not Africans. Those people are not Africans; they don't know a thing about Africa."
Oh,oh-oh! You see, the kids these days, they listen to the rap music. With the hippin' and the hoppin' and the bippin' and the boppin', it gives them the brain damage and the kids don't know what the jazz is all about. You see, jazz is like Jello pudding... no, that's not it. Jazz is like Kodak film... no, that's not right neither. I've got it, jazz is like the new Coke: it'll be around forever. (Cliff Huxatable - Cosby's character)
Long Live Comedy!
